The western hit will be back with more political machinations, family in-fighting, and plenty of ranching drama
After an interminable period with no news about Yellowstone's future, we finally know when more of the show will be headed to our screens.
The mid-season finale wrapped up on January 1, 2023, with the promise of six more episodes to come this summer to round out the show's super-sized, fourteen episode fifth season.
At the Golden Globes this year, Kevin Costner took home the show's first major awards show win for his role as John Dutton, but was unfortunately unable to attend the ceremony due to flooding near his California home. Co-stars Mo Brings Plenty and Cole Hauser were on hand, though, for the awards, and afterwards Hauser even opened up about a few rumors for the show's future.
When asked by ET about fan theories that one of the Dutton family members would die before the fifth season wraps up, Hauser cryptically responded, "I'm not the man to ask, but listen, you never know. [Yellowstone creator] Taylor [Sheridan] is one of those kinds of writers where you never know what's coming. I love that about him." He added, "I think the show's amazing because of it, so we'll see what he comes up with and concocts in the next season to come."
That last bit has perhaps fueled the most speculation among fans as the show has yet to be officially renewed for a sixth season, however it's not clear whether in referring to "next season" Hauser meant another future season of Yellowstone, or simply the upcoming second half of their fifth outing.
Additionally, in early February, Deadline reported on rumors that Yellowstone might be ending sometime soon.
"The crux of the issue with the original Yellowstone series involves star Kevin Costner and disagreements over shooting schedules," reads Deadline's story. "We are told Paramount Network has declined Costner’s most recent proposal and instead has made the decision to move on to the other show, sources said."
Paramount+ did not confirm, instead commenting:
"We have no news to report. Kevin Costner is a big part of Yellowstone and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come. Thanks to the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan, we are always working on franchise expansions of this incredible world he has built. Matthew McConaughey is a phenomenal talent with whom we’d love to partner," a Paramount Network spokesperson told the publication.
Here's what we know so far about Yellowstone season 5.
When will season 5 return?
The first half of the fifth season of Yellowstone debuted in November of 2022 and wrapped up in January, the show will be returning with another batch of episodes before the season ends. While an official date for the second installment of episodes has yet to be announced, Paramount has confirmed that the show will be returning some time in the summer of 2023.
The first trailer has arrived.
After months of waiting, we finally got our first real look at what's ahead for the Duttons. Paramount revealed the first full trailer, which includes some big revelations. The biggest? After beginning his run for governor last season, John Dutton looks to have nabbed the top spot, putting him in a major position of power in Montana—and putting his family squarely in the crosshairs.

What's in store for season 5?
In September, actors Cole Hauser (Rip), Kelly Reilly (Beth), and Luke Grimes (Kayce) gave Entertainment Weekly a few hints about what's in store for the upcoming season. As one might expect, it doesn't sound like things will be all smooth sailing for newlyweds Rip and Beth
"What I like about what [Taylor Sheridan] wrote is that he slow burns this year with me and Beth," Hauser said. "In the beginning, there's some wonderful moments between the two of us, some stuff that she's going through in her past, that she's having to acknowledge for the first time, and me trying to help her through that."
"The war feels internal this year for her," Reilly added, "[She's] haunted by the past, afraid for the future and fighting with all she has for the present moment."
However, it doesn't sound like the couple's in any danger of breaking up. Per Reilly, "Beth has always been devoted to Rip. Marriage does not change her. I think his love for her and hers for him is one of the very few things that keeps her demons at arm's length (mostly)."
As for Kayce, his own struggles don't sound to be abating any time soon following his dramatic vision at the end of season 4. "In true Kayce fashion, there's no relief from the sort of rock and a hard place that he's in between," Grimes said.
In August, star Kevin Costner spoke with Extra about where the show is headed this season, and possibly into the future. In season 5, he revealed, John's story centers on attempting to hold on to his land. "People who think that one man has too much, there’s people that know what they would do with the land," he said. "The whole thing of all these people attacking this guy and he’s trying to hold on to it, and I can relate to that."
As for the ever-present rumors of John dying, Costner said, "I don’t want to die… just too much to do. In terms of this story, I don’t know where that’s gonna go… I haven’t really thought about it." He also stated "I think that [show creator Taylor Sheridan]'s been writing a really high level. I’ll say when I don’t want to do it anymore," which certainly makes it sound like the Dutton patriarch is safe for the time being.
Another fact he's apparently staying hand-off about? The show's end. When asked whether he speaks with Sheridan about the show wrapping up, Costner explained, "I don’t because I think probably, in some way, we’re making it up… I think what comes on the page will be the thing that I look at."
