The Best Science Fiction and Fantasy Movies of 2022
This year was an
amazing one for science fiction, largely due to technological developments.
Cameras and effects have become more accessible and cost-effective, which in
turn has enabled filmmakers to create projects that were previously
inconceivable. As a result, there were many excellent low-budget sci-fi movies
this year that outperformed the big blockbuster CGI productions.
2022 was a great year
for sci-fi and fantasy films! Audiences were wowed by big blockbusters like
Avatar and Black Panther, as well as smaller films that made a huge impression.
Many of the movies centered around pandemics or viruses, likely in part due to
the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's a list of the 22 best sci-fi and fantasy films of
2022.
Avatar: The Way of Water
Avatar: The Way of Water is a stunning
film with impressive special effects, great performances, and memorable music.
While it may not feel like its own movie since it is an extension of the first
Avatar, James Cameron has created something remarkable that was made for the
big screen experience. Regardless, this epic deserves to be included in any
best-of list.
Troll
A paleontologist father and daughter
team up with and against the government to stop a giant troll that has come
back to life after excavation in the Dovre mountains. Netflix's Troll is an
exciting blend of Scandinavian folklore, Amblin Entertainment-style fantasy
films, and King Kong/Godzilla-like creature features. The movie has beautiful
special effects and a strong focus on the relationship between father and
daughter, making for an enjoyable yet slightly wacky experience.
Dual
Dual is a quirky sci-fi movie directed
by Riley Stearns. Set in a world where cloning is possible, it follows Karen
Gillan's character who receives a terminal diagnosis and decides to clone

The government has ordered a
gladiatorial duel to the death between a woman and her clone, so the woman
seeks out help from an intense and possibly suspicious self-defense instructor
(played by Aaron Paul) in order to prepare for the fight. The movie is strange
and allegorical, lacking any emotion or expression, but this creates an
estranged feeling that works well.

Tin Can, a piece of 'Covid Cinema' that was released theatrically and
commercially this year. The story follows a scientist trying to find a cure for
an unknown pandemic before she is mysteriously abducted and experiences memory

a corrupt society, it becomes apparent that something more than simple plot
